User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Decent replayable but not a great horror game
The first few levels are terrible. The hotel in particular is very confusing and easy to get lost in. After completing the first few levels the store and level design really pick up. I started to get a hint of Resistance: Fall Of Man toward the end which was very unexpected.

This game gets praises for being replayabile. I beat the game once, unlocked FPS mode with infinite ammo, and then I went back through the entire game running and shooting. (Essentially this is HARD MODE with GUNS, and you get an achievement for completing it). I put a piece of tape on the exact center of my screen to use as a targeting cursor for my guns when I’m not zooming in. Very fast.

Though this is not scary enough to be a horror game the ability to play the game as another genre makes this game worth it’s money.

4 Stars A Bloody Little Romp!
Condemned 2 has a similiar format to the first one, but there is nothing wrong with taking a good game and improving upon it. I had some fun with this title even though the gameplay was repetitive. You have a first person shooter with close combat weapons and a limited number of projectile weapons. Just about everything in the game can be used as a weapon and some items deal more damage vs speed and reach. Combos are not too difficult to pull off with a little well timed practice. Its a brutal game, enemies will be cursing you while you pummel them with a pipe then finish them off by smashing their head into an old TV. Its a dark and somewhat eerie game and the flashlight looks fantastic when shining down those dark corridors. There are alot of those moments where you see a quick flash of someone running around in the dark only to jump out and bust your chin with a 2 by 4, good stuff. There is also an investigation mode that allows you to study a crime scene and figure out the most probable cause of death which i found to be quite enjoyable and i wish there would have been more crimes scenes to investigate. I wasn’t really wowed by the storyline, but the close combat gameplay is what this title is about. There isn’t too much replay value here, one play through will probably do it for you. It would be a fantastic rental though, but its only 15 bucks so you wouldn’t really be out that much cash for a solid game.

5 Stars Brutal Violence!
I think people who gave this game a bad review was probably because the game was not what they where expecting. This game is not your average First Person Shooter. You rarely have a gun!!! lol

You punch a lot and have lead pipes and stuff.. Let me tell you that you really feel like your swinging that stuff around! it is brutal violence! You never feel like your a great warrior like you do Halo or have spectacular fire fights like in Gears of War. This is more like Doom 3 but more hand to hand. It plays in a similar way to the sleeper hit “breakdown” for the original xbox. The punching seems very believable in both games.

The game is a good looking game but it is dark. So its probably best to play it at night.

Most people I know arent into horror games but if you are this is one the best around. At this price its almost crazy not to check it out. if you have never played a game like this but do enjoy horror movies I say go for it because you will not regret it.

2 Stars Alright
For me a rental was well enough. Kudos to the game for being different; there are way too many “shooters” out there, but I actually found my self yearning for a good shooter after picking up this game. The game has gotten good reviews by video game reviewers/websites, and was the basis for picking up this as a rental.

I found myself, almost instantly, bored of just punching and blocking opponents punches. In my view it would be much better as a third person game, one where you are controlling a character you can actually see.

More than any other game, it seems to border on reality. There are no double flip moves, climbing up the side of buildings, punching opponents through brick walls. These are all things I kind of yearned for, a sense of fantasy….in a word. Instead it is just brutal realistic violence.

It was something to do to pass the time…other than that, if I had better things to do I would have done them, rather than playing this game.

5 Stars Ready to have some fun?
Dead birds and psychotic behavior were two strange occurrences that happened while SCU agent Ethan Thomas chased a serial killer in Condemned: Criminal Origins. Now, city-wide violence has gone up, and a cult called the Oro is believed to be influencing it all. You once again are in control of Ethan Thomas, who (after the events of the first game) quit the bureau, and descended into alcoholism and homelessness. As a result, he’s grown bitter, darker, and violent. So while he may look like he’ll fight any crazed psychotic that crosses his path, he’s still able to do good as a forensic investigator. As expected, the game still has the eerie tone of the first, but is way more darker, and violent. You are able to find more ammo for firearms in certain levels, but melee weapons are still the way here like before. The melee mechanics have changed somewhat, and enemy A.I. has improved, making the game more challenging especially if you decide to just melee every enemy. Forensic work is still a heavy occurrence. While you still do use tools to conduct the work, you’re presented with choices in order to guess the nature of the crime. Correct guesses give you points which can add up and lead to rewards towards upgrades depending on how you do in levels. Also, the visions and hallucinations from the first game are back, very much so like in the F.E.A.R. games. Plus, in certain areas, lighting tends to become very dark, and in other areas very bright at times. Some have complained about it. It is my belief that it is all meant to disorient and challenge the player’s sanity, and add to the overall dark tone. Not to make the game less enjoyable or unplayable. Last, but not least, while I don’t mean to bag on the Playstation 3, I’m very glad I own an Xbox 360. No, I’m not a fanboy. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions about both systems. They both have their ups and downs, but after comparing certain games on both systems, the 360 seems to be better in my opinion. The reason why I’m stating this in the review? I’ve read some people claiming audio problems in the PS3 version of the game. I can assure that you won’t find it on this version. I’ve played the entire game, it looks and sounds great. So if this seems like your kind of game, give it a chance. Parents, check the rating on the box, and see the “M for Mature” symbol before you decide to buy this for your kids.

Also, check out the F.E.A.R. games, which were also developed by Monolith, the creators of the Condemned series.

Dead Space

Dead Space from EA is sure to please any action-adventure gamer looking for a bloody battle against deadly aliens. Dead Space for Xbox 360 begins when a massive mining ship, the USG Ishimura, comes in contact with a mysterious alien artifact and suddenly loses its communications with Earth. Engineer Isaac Clarke is sent to repair

the Ishimura’s communications, but arrives to find a floating vessel that has become a complete bloodbath. The crew is mutilated and infected with an ancient alien scourge. Clarke’s repair mission is transformed to one of survival as he fights to save himself and return the artifact to the planet at any cost.

Fight with Weapons and Telekinesis
The alien hordes are incredibly resilient. You’ll have to find creative ways to neutralize the attacking enemies by shearing off limbs with powerful weapons. And when the ammo runs out you’ll be thankful that you can use your telekinetic powers to pick up objects (even the aliens’ own severed arms and legs) and hurl them at your advancing enemies.

Graphics, Effects, and Sound Increase the Horror
EA delivers an incredibly frightening experience with state-of-the-art graphics and effects, an audio system that will have you jumping out of your seat, and a truly horrific atmosphere that is permeated with death, mutilation, and despair. You’ll have to be resilient to slash through the alien onslaught and stop this virulent scourge. As you explore the ship, the tragic story of the USG Ishimura will unfold in gory detail as you discover frantic logs from the hideously transformed crew in their final days.

True Zero-G Effects
You’ll be able to take full advantage of zero gravity in Deep Space. Battling enemies and solving puzzles takes on new challenges and present ingenious opportunities with the Zero-G game play. You can use zero gravity to create your own path around obstacles by walking on walls and the ceiling. Leap across vast distances or change your perspective to gain a strategic advantage over your enemies.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Easy Five Stars
I rarely give five-star reviews for anything, but DEAD SPACE met and exceeded all my expectations.

IMMERSIVE. I felt a chilling claustrophobia throughout the whole game. I found myself getting tense all over weaving my way through all the closed spaces.

EXPANSIVE. On the other hand, some of the environments were HUGE, especially when I was cruising around outside the spaceship with wide open space floating overhead. Awe-inspiring vistas.

DISTURBING. Some of the monsters were genuinely disturbing to the point of believability. I was truly freaked out by the humanoid things that had the lower jaw missing and an extra arm coming out of the stomach. Plus, the storyline about this fanatical sect really bumps up the urgency and dread.

CINEMATIC. The cut scenes were beautifully rendered, and honestly I felt more like I was playing a movie than a game most of the time.

VISCERAL. Gore, gore, gore. Lots of wonderful, splattery innards.

MUSICAL. The score was well-written and appropriately orchestrated, woven together well with the sound effects and properly placed throughout the whole game. Jason Graves did a brilliant job, and I can’t wait to hear what he does next.

FUN. The visuals, gameplay, horror, storyline all added up to one of the top ten games I’ve ever played.

5 Stars gory, gruesome, galactic fun
i’m a 60 year old former executive who bought an xbox 360 and 16 different videogames just to see what was up with the medium. having played to the finish all the popular titles from GTA 4 and Fallout 3 to Bioshock and Crackdown, i have to say this game ranks very high on graphical quality, ragdoll and object dynamics, creature and environment concept, sound effects, musical score and plotting. it’s the whole package.

the plot is straightforward: a crippled mining ship, boarded by a repair/rescue crew, finds the crew gone, replaced by horrid alien creatures. through many tasks and trials they appraise the situation, attempt rescue and escape, and finally deal with treachery among themselves. at the end the hero faces one of the visually most impressive boss battles in any game i’ve played, and the hero (if he wins) barely escapes with his life. or does he?

this game avoids all the annoying features of other games. save stations are well situated, and entire levels load in one shot — as a tram ride from one part of the mining ship to another. there are no annoying waits as subsections load during play. the QA is excellent — i encountered no bugs or crashes. there is a selection of six weapons, all fun to use (the line gun and plasma cutter are mainstays), and (unlike the tedious diversity in bioshock) only two “special powers” — projective kinesis and time stopping stasis. there are one or two “stores” in each level where scavenged credits and materiel can be traded for weapons, ammo, health and suit upgrades (up to a level 6). when you’re done, you can play through again, keeping all the weapons and credits you’ve earned, but without advancing to a more difficult level.

the internal navigation and guidance helps (pop up three dimensional map, pavement guideline that appears by pressing a motion stick, hero journal, archive of audio recordings, etc.) make it hard to get lost or get confused. the tutorial episodes at the beginning of the game are clear, and the control combinations easy to remember.

the art is one of the real pleasures in this game. environments have all been lovingly painted — none of the tessellated pavements and walls of cheaper games — and there is real diversity in color, lighting and clutter. the music is cinematic quality, and one of the points i especially enjoyed was the way mechanical sounds (malfunctioning doors slamming repetitively, fans scraping rhythmically) were seamlessly woven into the musical soundtrack as percussion effects. the monster effects are creepy and there are plenty of horror film “gotcha” moments woven into the action.

my only suggestion is that players tackle the game in “easy” mode. as far as i can tell, the only difference in play is how hard you have to work to kill aliens and find ammo; and you will surely die often at the difficult level. this means you’ll have to really work to get past attacks, and sit through repetitive and extended cut scenes of your own dismemberment and evisceration before starting over. in the “easy” level you can actually go through an entire level without dying, and this creates an immersive, continuous play experience that is very much like watching yourself in a movie. this heightens the horror experience and involvement in play. and to really enjoy the art and action, you should only play this game in the dark!

2 Stars Overated
I really think this game has been overated. I found the whole thing monotonous and referential to quite a few other games that have come before. The setting reminded me very strongly of Doom 3, the alien creatures (Necromorphs- which itself is not a very original name) of The Suffering, and the plot “twist” (which even my kids saw coming from way off) from Bioshock, to name just a few. Gameplay was rather stagnant and the weapons that become available as the game progresses are really superfluous as you can kill most things with the first cutter you get. It wasnt creepy (Twinkle twinkle little star!- please), it wasnt exciting, it was just, well boring.

5 Stars Survival horror gets off life support!
Many survival horror fans have gotten jaded. They think the genre is dying and in one review I heard someone saying Dead Space was RE 4 in space. While dead space has similar controls as RE 4 and even an over the shoulder 3rd person view point it is NOT remotely similar to RE 4 in atmosphere or level design.

For one thing,Issac is not a super elite mercenary. When the Ishumura planet resource harvester ship goes haywire Issac’s job is to do some routine repairs. However there is a bit of worry right away when he receives an odd SOS from his main squeeze Nicole who is a medical officer aboard the space ship he is charged with fixing up. Luckily her message is so subtle and obscure it does not give away the whole story right away.

Along with Issac is a tough as nails take charge leader type and a female crew mate who is the shiznet at hacking and cracking. While these characters “help” Issac through a holographic communications screen with advice our poor protagonist ends up separated from his team and completely alone.

Dead Space is really good at telling you everything you need to know WITHOUT accessing a menu. Issac’s health is measured by the glowing tubes down the spine of his armor and almost all information is relayed to him through a pop up screen device on his helmet he can manipulate at a whim. Likewise the crescent glowing icon on Issac’s right shoulder gauges his “stasis energy” used to slow the opening and closing of malfunctioning doors. This makes Dead Space a more seamless experience and lulls you into a creepy train of thought of playing the game without always having the reminders it is a game.

Much like Bio Shock Issac comes to terminals where he can buy equipment such as ammo, health packs, and even new weapons. Each main ability or weapon is upgraded by circular disks called “nodes” you apply at fold out work benches. Nodes are rare, luckily they can be bought as well albeit at a high price. Issac even gets telekinesis. He can move things around and toss them similar to how Gordon Friedman does with the gravity gun in Half Life 2. Add all this atop of using gravity boots to mag lock onto walls and ceilings when in zero gravity it quickly becomes apparent Dead Space is not a tired retread or lackluster clone of Resident Evil. The only similarities it bears is that it is a hybrid between action thriller and survival horror. Luckily for those of us who love a good scare it is more terrifying and surreal than it is cheesy and over the top epic.

You can run and gun in dead space (further accentuating the differences between it and RE). As a matter of fact when hordes of necromorphs attack it is a good strategy to run backwards while firing away, or at least getting your bearings as you occasionally let fly with some sizzling plasma bolts.

So what are necromorphs? Apparently after busting apart a planet for resources the Ishumura away team found an odd artifact with ruins on it. Somehow this began mutating crew members into monsters. While that is not very original as a concept Necromorphs make ganados and zombies look tame by comparison. Even after having legs or an arm blown off these hideous freaks will still come after you and sometimes they may play dead after you hammer into them with a few rounds. As you confidently twirl your plasma torch and turn your back “wham!” you get a bone blade appendage through your kidney for not being thorough. I wasted a lot of ammo to make sure I decapitated every dead body or slain monster. Call me paranoid but hey, I rather be safe than sorry!

Each level has a series of mission objectives that range from refueling the Ishumura to recovering the captain’s log. While these may seem a bit dull at least they make sense within a science fiction setting . In dead space you never have to find a ruby and an emerald then put them into the eye sockets of a gargoyle statue. Normally a puzzle requires using your telekinesis to move something or using a stasis shot to slow down a dangerous moving obstacle so you can past through into the next area.

While dead space is gory it does not just rely on blood n guts to frighten you. Even when you are not attacked by necromorphs the ship’s metal haul creaks menacingly and the voices of the dead are heard whispering in select locations. You even pick up data pad diaries from Ishumura’s crew and as you can well imagine their last moments were filled with dread and hopelessness. Witnessing Issac having to wrestle for his dear life while locked in the clutches of a necromorph is not nearly as bone chilling as helplessly watching the person who seems safe behind a window get impaled and dragged into the shadows screaming or having to look at a nurse cackling insanely right before she fires up a bone saw and cuts her own throat. You wonder who you have to pity more…the grotesque creatures or those who were left unaltered as normal human beings?

If you approach all this from the optimistic perspective of an enthusiast instead of an embittered fan boy Dead Space is a wonderful horror game. As much as I covet RE 4 and RE 5 and herald them as awesome games they are “thrillers”. Dead Space quintessentially is “true dread” pumped right into your veins. It’s not toying with your emotions or trying to be something it is not.

I began playing it in the day time and it still got my heart pounding. For the foolish elitist bigots out there unshakable in their stance that “western developers” don’t know diddly about true horror this game has arrived to bust their chops!

In closing if you have played these games for many years you’re not going to jump from fright every 2 minutes. Once you become accustomed to scare tactics it can NEVER compare to the glory days when you were a virgin of the genre playing Silent Hill or RE 2 for the first time. However to me this game is so excellent at what it does it deserves some grudging respect from the survival horror community.

Pros

+Intriguing story

+Unrelenting terrifying enemies that give their all even after their limbs fly off.

+Atmospheric creepiness that balances out the blatant blood and gore

+Easy to learn controls

+Can run and shoot.

+Things such as anti gravity exploration and using telekinesis “mix up” the usual horror experience.

+No annoying menus to jolt you out of the fear. Every aspect of the game from your health to gathered information is all woven seamlessly into the technology of Issac’s suit!

+Issac’s “weapons” are actually tools to start with reminding us he is a mechanic and not a steroid popping space marine.

Con

-It’s a space ship so some areas get to look very much the same after awhile.

-Reading text logs via Issac’s holographic visor is near impossible. In my opinion everything should have been voiced.

-Enemies are varied at first but get repetitive later on.

Pro or con??

+/- Issac is a silent faceless protagonist very much akin to the hero in Bio Shock, Gordon Friedman in Half Life 2, and Master Chief in Halo. To some of you this maybe a problem however my take on it is as follows.

“Issac doesn’t talk but it is the very fact he doesn’t spout cheesy one liners or ridiculous catch phrases that makes his struggle that much more realistic, horrifying, and genuine.”

+/- There’s alot of gore, perhaps moreso than any other game I’ve played. Sadly those that pride themselves on loving “psychological horror” are going to snub their noses at Dead Space a lot for that reason alone and in so doing miss out on the parts of it that are very surrealistic, thought provoking, and haunting.

5 Stars Dead Space
Dead space is a true sci-fi horror game; much like “advent horizon” and john carpenter’s “the thing”. With a lot of replay ability and some frighting scenes, it’ll be hard for you to put down the controller. I give this game five stars and it’s a game that every gamer should have in their collection.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars All I care about is graphics
I buy video games to see the graphics on my 24 inch HD monitor. BP is pretty good, but not as advanced as I thought it would be. I am looking for realism and I still feel like what we are getting is high-detail animation. My favorite game so far is GRID and I am looking forward to Dirt2.

5 Stars Where to begin?
Where should I begin…. Having finished the game I can truthfully tell everything about this game.

Since this is a ‘teen’ game, I was able to buy it myself. (I’m only 15.)

This is a WWII game in which you take both the sides of the American forces and the Japanese empire’s. You can change how the battle went by either winning or losing the fight you have just done. For example, in a mission in which the Japanese won you might play as the Japanese and lose or play as the Americans and win or still lose. This game is on the way to the next-gen software, which allows for many changes in the game, like in GTA4. Finally most new games are catching up to GTA4’s aura of uniqueness in real time strategy.

Mop-up:

Buy-yes

Rent before-Optional

Replay value-9/10

LIVE-8.5/10

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

In short, I would give this game 5/5, or 9.5/10. In my mindset, not much can be improved, but the storyline can be tweaked slightly to the better.

Fracture

June 29th, 2009 Xbox Reviews No comments

Fracture

Fracture advances players to the year 2161, where the effects of global warming have altered the planet’s landscape, and a clash in ideologies over human enhancement places society on the threshold of war. In utilizing the core gameplay mechanic of Fracture, a destructive next-generation technology known as Terrain Deformation, players are equipped with an arsenal of futuristic weaponry to strategically reshape their surroundings on the fly. Every action they perform dynamically reshapes the earth in ways no videogame has ever seen.

Players set foot on the frontlines of this epic conflict in the role of Jet Brody, a demolitions expert fighting for the Atlantic Alliance, who rely upon cybernetic enhancement. Pitted against the genetically enhanced soldiers of the Pacifican army, players will experience a revolution in 22nd-century warfare. When Brody throws a tectonic grenade onto a level battlefield, the ground blasts upward providing access to otherwise unreachable areas or providing cover against approaching enemies. Surrounded on all sides by Pacifican forces, Brody heaves a vortex grenade, creating a swirling tornado-like mass of boulder, dirt and debris to dispatch his foes. These are just a few samples of the possibilities for Terrain Deformation. Players not only change the battlefield – they change the face of the battle itself.

Reshape the battlefield with terrain shattering weapons: Experience a dynamic battlefield that is unique every time you play. Use never-before-seen weapons to fracture, crater, freeze, or elevate the earth. Unleash a subterranean torpedo toward your enemy and literally blast the earth from beneath his feet. For the first time, players can mold a war zone for an advantage to push the attack or mount a defense.

Experience a story of betrayal and revenge: Follow the journey of a patriotic Atlantic Alliance soldier when an act of treason launches him into the lethal battlefield of the 22nd century, as forces wage a battle of genetics vs. cybernetics. In a war that divides loyalties and tests the bonds of country and family, this soldier’s discoveries will ultimately decide the fate of North America and perhaps the world.

Multi-player & co-operative play allows the terrain deforming battles to rage on: Choose the side of the genetically enhanced Pacificans or the cybernetically powerful Atlantic Alliance, then jump online and exploit your chosen sides advantages as Terrain Deformation and Genetic vs. Cybernetic elements allow for endless hours of fun with friends online.

Fight for control of familiar locations and landmarks: The last World Wars were fought in Europe, but the next great global war will be fought on American soil. Battle in famous locations across the United States. Defend the Atlantic Alliance in Washington, DC, fight the decisive battle for control of Pacifica in the basin of the now-empty San Francisco bay and uncover the secret that will determine the world’s fate in the Southwest Desert.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Facture
Game play is corny and repetitive at times. But overall I found the online reviews to be too harsh. It is worth buying and a good way to pass time. It is not one of the best games, but it is till fun

5 Stars Good game
This game was alot of fun. The whole earth moving thing sounds lame but really is a hoot once you get the hang of it. I liked being able to create my own cover in a fire fight. Only thing I didn’t like was having to do a ‘quest’ in exaclty the way they wanted you to. But really recomend for fun.

4 Stars Probably going to be a rental
Since there are no reviews for this game, I’ve decided to write one for all the people thinking about playing it. Keep in mind that its been a while since the last time I wrote a review, so here it goes.

To start, I’ll just give a number review then explain why. 6.75/10

First off, if you like action third person shooters, then this is definitely a game to check out. There is a constant flow of enemies to take out with plenty of interesting guns and grenades that do some amazing damage. The terrain gun is used primarily for giving yourself cover and also to solve the many puzzles the litter the game. The game also looks amazing in HD, sights and sounds are great. The problem that I had that occasionally might ruin a game for me is story. The story just felt a little boring. But dont get me wrong, the concept of the way we treat this planet cathing up with us was interesting, and the ideas of what might happen to our country in that time were good too, but I just didn’t feel for the characters as much as I would have liked. It is first and foremost a action shooter with the twist of a terrain deforming gun. So its worth checking out if this is your type of game. I liked it, but with so much more games coming out in the next two months, this might have to be one of those rentals.

4 Stars A simple review
This game is purely influenced by three games. Halo, Lost Planet, and Mass Effect. But not as good as either one. When you play it it becomes very very apparent. If you ever wondered what Halo would be like as Lost Planets 3rd person shooter this is it. It’s very contrived. It has the same Halo shooter jumping around like a Kangaroo game mechanic. It is challenging to take someone down like Halo and Lost Planet as everyone is shielded. That’s where you have to develop your skill. Instead of Lost Planets grapple and summersaulting you have the entrencher which enables you to deform the landscape which is cool. It is the games only saving grace otherwise it would be very generic. It looks like Mass Effect and it seems like Mass Effects lost multiplayer. The weapons are more similar to Mass Effects weapons. I would like to give it 3 1/2 stars but I will error for 4 instead of 3. A lot of people are going to hate this game. If you love Halo but you are bored with it you will probably like this game for awhile but not forever. It seems like that was the game developers target audience. Bored Halo players. And it’s Halo players that dominate this games multiplayer. If you don’t like Halo or Lost Planet don’t buy this game. It is not for you. It could just as well be a 1 or 2 star game. It will all depend on your mood. Play the demo before you buy it or even rent it. It will be the best indicator if you will like it or not.
