User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Ridiculous
After AC4, the AC series took a serious nosedive and this entry is a perfect example of the ongoing low quality of the newer titles. The story lines have gotten oh-so-inane and the characters — especially their dialogue — seem like they’ve been created for three-year-olds. But we don’t play games like this for the story, we’re looking for realistic action, and this game misses that target big time. Instead of stressing actual battle characteristics, the developers have created impossible situations (really, flying aircraft carriers?) that simply do not engage the player. The graphics are fine but the incredibly goofy missions just make this game look silly, and the sheer implausibility of the situations (a plane with a payload of 125 missiles?) make AC6 a throwaway. The uneven degree of difficulty of opponents creates frustration because you don’t know from one mission to the next whether you’ll be battling nitwits or supermen. I would advise all but the under-eight crowd to avoid this game.

3 Stars Fun cheezy campaine. Online is so so.
I thought the campaine was fun although the contries involved use funny fictional names. Since I’m use to playing Halo 3 I’m use to seeing the enemy right in front of you and than you shoot. With Ace Combat six you can’t see the enemy. Your totally going by color alerts on the screen to to tell you where to shoot. There is a little tiny window on the upper left that shows a little plane you are trying to shoot.

Online seems very one dimentional. To me your just flying around in circles until either you or your apponent gives in. After a while my thumb was in pain. Over all it’s not bat but I guess it could be better.

4 Stars A worthy successor for the Ace Combat series
To start, I am the kind of person that when they hear an airplane flying around, they immediately stop what they’re doing and look up to see what kind of plane it is. If it’s a military plane, I am enough of a military buff to know what kind it is.

For anyone that fits the above description–or just loves flying military jets and blowing stuff up–this is a fantastic way to fulfill your craving. Although I recall there being more aircraft types in older Ace Combat games, it is by no means a disappointment. The planes do handle differently from each other, and although the missions can get a bit dry after your second playthrough, it is still a keeper, especially now that the price has been reduced. The visuals are GORGEOUS, and you will find yourself watching the replays of your mission almost more than playing the game itself because it is so captivating and looks pretty dang real.

The voice acting is ridiculous, but then again it is a Japanese game, and the storyline is a bit strange at times, but again, it is a Japanese game. Still, if you like to fly planes and blow stuff up, that will seem like a minor inconvenience.

4 Stars YEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
The title for my review comes from a Far Side cartoon that showed two aliens in their UFO skimming the skyscrapers of some earthly city at high speed.

That’s pretty much the sort of feeling I get from these Ace Combat games.

The last one (and first one) I played was Ace Combat 4 on the PS2, and boy, was that a treat! So here is how I think Ace Combat 6 stacks up . . .

GAMEPLAY: The aircraft fly and handle perfectly. Very responsive and you can tell the differences when you fly different ones. The newest feature is that missions are broken down into different sub-objectives and you can have only the current objective targets show up on your radar. Very handy for reducing radar clutter as there are ALOT of dots and lines and waypoints scattered throughout. The battlefield is very busy!

You can also land your aircraft mid-mission and also refuel in-flight, which help break up the monotony.

SOUND: The sound effects are great, from the radio chatter to the sounds of explosions and your guns firing.

MUSIC: Not that the music is why I’d play an Ace Combat game, but the music was merely average this time around, to include the last mission. I remember how shocked I was at the epic Agnus Dei playing for the last mission in Ace Combat 4.

BATTLES: Ace Combat 6 has a mission where you’re attacking these flying Manta Ray-like aircraft carriers and there are so many trails of smoke from missiles that you sometimes feel like you’re in a hedge maze in the clouds! Very surreal feeling and extremely fun! That mission in particular reminded me of the NES top-down airplane shooters of old (Tiger Shark, 1942, 1943, etc).

Another nice touch is that when you fly low to the ground, you can see your troops advancing and firing their weapons at the enemy positions, giving you the feeling that this is truly a team effort and that you are not an Air Force of One, so to speak. The ability to call for Allied attacks and cover are good for the times you need a little extra help.

STORY and MULTIPLAYER: I skipped all the cutscenes, but from what little I saw of them they looked graphically impressive. I have not played this game multiplayer either, so I am not scoring these two in my overall assessment of the game.

REPLAY VALUE: You can unlock different aircraft, medals, aircraft paint-jobs, soundtrack-player, cut-scene viewer, replay-mode, difficulty levels and a few other things which give this game great replay value. Most importantly is the inclusion of a New Game SP mode, where you can play the game again but with all the aircraft and weapons you purchased from your last play-through.

GRAPHICS: I recently played a HAWX demo and it struck me how cartoony their aircraft looked–and that is a more recent game! The aircraft in AC6 are about as close as you’re going to get, short of joining the Air Force yourself and going for the real thing.

OVERALL: If you don’t mind the fact that this game is a cross between a flight simulator and an arcade shooter, you’ll have a great time with this one. Sure, other games might be more realistic, but there is a reason why there is an Ace Combat 6–the series wouldn’t have made it this far if it didn’t deliver the goods!

5 Stars great game…apo shipping rediculous time… 1and a half months
great game no complaints about that but it was like snail mail on acid… took about a month and a half for my game to get to my APO address which is considered an US address located in new york…

5 Stars I love Katamari
Katamari is my favorite video game series. It would seem like a game were the whole point is to pick up stuff to get bigger would be boring, but it is super addictive.

3 Stars How Did they Downgrade a Game on an Upgraded System?
That’s my question. With the current generation of games, I’ve seen this happen to a few titles. Sonic was one of them (for the PS3) but most disappointing to me, so was this installment of the Katamari series. From the get-go, this game had issues. Why it was released on the XBox 360 is another gripe of mine considering it had a very loyal playstation audience is yet another mystery. Then buckling down and playing it is where the other issues came to play.

The best thing about it is that the game does try to stay true to the basics. You’ll recognize the quirky characters right away and in general, the game-play – which is a bit of a trick to master at first – remains somewhat constant. And it’s still fun to try to catch different items and break your time goals.

But there are some negatives here. First and foremost, I can understand the graphics not being dramatically different from the PS2 version – that’s a part of the charm of the game to me. But you’d think that with so much more power available with the system, they could enhance a lot of different things. For example, there’s no reason why the camera angles have to be so spotty & confusing at times. And there’s no reason why the actual rolling and game-play can’t be smoother. Maybe it’s a result of the controller, but the speed role is vital for getting through a lot of the levels and it’s severely impeded and sometimes downright irresponsive. Somehow, you have less game-play even though the game’s on an IMO better overall system. Another big gripe that I have is that the lack of size of the game is a massive disappointment. With this game being on the 360, there should have been plenty of room for the developers to have some more fun themselves in creating more levels and environments to roll with. The ones there are good, but it’s not even the same as “We Love Katamari”, which had a neat under-water level.

All in all, it’s still a fun game that you can wind up spending hours playing – especially if you’re a true Katamari afficionado. But then again if you’re a true afficionado, you’ll definitely be disappointed in the lack of development. I know they have deadlines nad everything, but sometimes I wish the developers/companies would say: “Hey, let’s take a little longer and really make this game better instead of rushing it out to market.” I mean really – one of the easiest enhancements that they could’ve made to the game-play would be giving the Prince the ability to use the katamari as a boomerang on occasion. Like, give him a meter, and when the meter’s ready, he can ‘throw’ it or something. Seems so obvious to me and probably a lot of others, but they didn’t make the enhancement. There are a lot of ways to make this creative title even more creative.

I hope they do come out with another one for the PS3, and that it will be better than this one because honestly for those that never played the first two (the psp version was iffy as well…), I don’t think you’re really getting the best experience with this edition of the series.

3 Stars Not impressed
My roommate in college had the first two Katamari games for PS2, and they were so much fun that I decided to buy the XBox360 version for myself. However, I was very disappointed. I found the camera angles while playing very difficult to work with- the game was much easier to play on Playstation. Also, if you are prone to motion-sickness at all, I would advise sticking to PS. While the first two Katamari games didn’t bother me at all, I quickly realized that Katamari on XBox makes me VERY nauseous after about ten minutes- I had to stop playing to be sick. Thinking it was something I ate, I tried playing again a week later, and again one time after that, with the same result. This may sound silly, but I have never had that problem with a video game before (except Super Monkey Ball), so I thought it was worth mentioning.

5 Stars GREATEST GAME EVER
I’m into action games such as Halo 3, Call of Duty, Gears of War, and so on. But this game is better than all of them. I played this game over and over again. It was extremely hard to find in store, so if you want to buy it, get it on amazon.

Seriously GET THE GAME. If you die before playing this game, you have failed at life and should be ashamed. Go now! GET THIS GAME!

3 Stars The most frustrating game in the series.
While I admire the fact that this wacky franchise continues on to a next-gen system, and the same quirky humor can be found in many of the Kings rants and throughout the levels, they have just tweaked this game too much to really appreciate it. I found myself actually saying “I hate this” when I couldn’t even complete the third mission. We have played/beaten the first two Katamari games many times, and even we found the controls, camera angles and level goals insanely difficult.

*The king talks way too much. How can you see what you are rolling up with his big hovering face and lines of text in the middle of the screen? It is too difficult to click the button to make him go away without disrupting your momentum.

*The level goals are insanely tough. You fail more mission than you pass, and even then you barely scrape by. This makes appreciating the level design and exploring the nooks and crannies of each level impossible. I’m sure there are many clever things in the game, I’m just frantically skimming past them looking for small enough things to absorb. A difficulty setting would make this problem moot.

*The controls feel even messier than they did before, if that is even possible. I am a tense player, so I find myself clutching the control, thus making my character flip all over the Katamari. I can’t really turn corners and I get stuck a lot.

*I find my Katamari gets stuck in between items or walls/corners/shelves a lot more than before. And when the camera gets stuck behind walls and stuff, I literally cannot see where I am on the screen.

I do love finding all the presents and cousins in the levels, but with the problems in this game, these rewards just aren’t as sweet when I find myself cursing the King and his stupid demands.

It sucks to say this, but this could have been a lot better. I am disappointed, and will just go back to the previous versions of this game I already own. Maybe the next one will be better!
